The greatest accomplishments of our time began with a thought, an idea – a dream. Your dream is your VISION, your ideal for any area of your life. Deliberately crafting and drafting your dream is a distinct privilege of being human.
We align ourselves with our deepest desires by writing down our dreams. Dream crafting is a creative and courageous practice of invitation, or welcoming your highest presence, your highest possibilities. We’re asking ourselves to design the ways in which we receive and respond to our lives.
From personal experience, engaging in the practice of designing my life makes my days more rich, more creative, and less doubtful. Being more awake to my highest aim with regards to any area of my life, I’m far more likely to act accordingly. Scientifically, researchers are exploring this phenomenon “…the power of writing — and then rewriting — your personal story can lead to behavioral changes and improve happiness,” according to a recent study cited in the New York Times.
We all have a personal narrative that shapes our view of the world and ourselves. With dream crafting, we are designing that narrative, rather than depending on our history or the possibilities of our past, to determine how we live today. In the study, amongst university students who’d been prompted to change/rewrite their personal stories, grades improved and there were fewer dropouts. In my own experience, writing my dreams moves me daily to do the smallest actions – actions that pave brave pathways in the areas I most need to address.
The Areas, in no particular order: Career, Body, Relationship to Self, Habits, Romance, Relationship to Another, Relationship to Time, Sex, Adventure, Learning, Family, Community, Money, Character Traits, Body, Health, Spirituality, Personal Space, and Home.
One good example is my Career dream. Since writing it, I’m fully aware of my wish to reach millions with my work – instead of thousands. To that end, I’m now acting with much more clarity and intention, and am choosing creative projects I love and working with the most inspiring and poetic luminaries. With regards to my Family dream, where I used to avoid interactions in certain situations, yell at my boy unnecessarily and blame everyone else, now I engage in honest ways, and talk to my boy regularly about how we can be better for one another. With regards to my Habits, I’ve ended a long struggle with addiction, and I’m finally ready to talk about it.
Couple points. There are guidelines to how these Dreams are written, and I edit mine at least every couple of months. Here’s a handful of my Dreams – in Areas that have vastly improved since I began writing them in 2010 – with my notes about how they’ve shifted.
Community — friends, depth, intimacy. My community is deep and strong, and simultaneously far and wide. My close friends know exactly who they are to me, and as I deepen my own personal work, my huge community of students benefits from those understandings. And as I broaden my reach, I consciously nurture my closest relationships to stay connected and in touch with my core soul family.
With regards to community, I’d been isolating myself and worrying about when, how and why I was doing my work. Since writing this down, I’ve begun working closely with my favorite humans, deepening my own personal studies and believing so strongly in my capacity to be both connected and impactful on a wide scale.
Time — how well do you manage your time, to-dos, and scheduling? I am able to stretch and bend time. I have a love affair with it. I am calm and cool because I’m right where I need to be, right on time. I take my time, I choose how i spend my time. I am focused, present and ready. My time is my design.
Since writing this dream, I’ve stopped battling time and made it my friend. So when I have to be somewhere, instead of leaving 20 minutes to be there 10 minutes late, I leave 40 minutes in advance. Then if there is some unforeseen delay, I’m smiling and calm, knowing I’m still okay with plenty of time to spare.
Relationships with Another — Are you currently in a relationship or not, what are you looking for, what would your dream relationship look like? By my side is the man i love in a way i never knew possible. This is love within like, and like within love. I am in a deep state of respect for James, and I am connected, clear and delicious. We design our life together, and cultivate a profound connection that inspires us both to rise higher. I listen to him, and I offer support in the forms of magic and guidance. I lift him up. I heal him with my hands. I love him with my eyes. I am calm and kind. I communicate well to manage daily expectations, and I make it an adventure. I am grateful for him. I’m in awe of our story, and I am growing wiser, sexier and happier, nourished and brilliantly in love.
Here, writing down who I am with regards to my man has made me a much better girlfriend, best friend and lover. I’d spent a lot of time in varying degrees of panic, fear, inconsistency and doubt, rather than healing, calm, kindness and clean communication. Now I’m (almost always) proud of who I am in my relationship, and when I’m not, I can apologize and stay in connection.
Money — Are you happy with the amount you earn, the amount you’ve saved, how you spend your money, and how it’s managed? Money is flowing; I am an open channel for abundance. The work I do to help millions of people be excellent communicators and healers helps me to take care of myself, my family, and my chosen causes. There is flow from my books, writings, products, coaching, and teachings, and I feel connected to money, and grateful for it. I am comfortable asking for growing fees for my speaking and teaching engagements – and i get what I’m worth. I’m spending, I’m saving, I’m easeful and I’m on it. I have a glorious relationship with wealth.
This is a good one. I never looked at my bank account balance. Every month I was afraid, hiding from the truth about my finances. I’d never felt safe making money, never knew why. Now I have the most magical relationship with money, I am consistently aware of my growing balances, I give money to the causes that have meaning to me, and donate time without questioning whether it’s okay for my bottom line. This is a glorious shift.
Starting Monday, March 9th, I’ll be leading a transformative 4-week course in the art of having an exhilarating dream and making it a reality.
